Hang snatch, above the knee vs hang snatch, below the knee

The hang snatch, above the knee runs at 85–92% of your squat snatch and the hang snatch, below the knee at 80–88%. Both train finishing the pull and where the bar goes. Here they are moving next to each other, with everything snatchlike prescribes each one for.

Hang snatch, above the knee

85–92% of your snatch

Down to the top of the knee, then go. No floor to build speed with.

Lower to the top of the knee and go from there. No floor to build speed with, so the hips have to actually do something.

Watch for: The shoulders staying over the bar in the hang, then a full finish before the drop.

Hang snatch, below the knee

80–88% of your snatch

Down past the knee, hold the position, then go.

The awkward one. Teaches patience through the knee, which is where most bars start running away.

Watch for: The knees moving back out of the way of the bar while the back angle holds.

Both at half speed, on one clock.

Each figure is the same six points the video read judges. The disc is the hands: the detector sees hands, not a barbell, so the bar is wherever the wrists are.

How heavy

Their bands overlap — 85–92% and 80–88% — so neither is simply the heavy one; where in its band you work depends on the day. Both are percentages of your squat snatch, and both are conventional coaching bands rather than anything measured here: where to start on a drill you have never done, before the bar tells you the rest.

Which one do you need?

That depends on what is capping your snatch, and that is a question your numbers answer. Put in three you already know — your snatch, and any of your power snatch, overhead squat and back squat — and snatchlike names the limiter and writes the session for it. A lift you have not tested is left out rather than guessed. Or film one snatch from the side: the pose model runs in this browser tab and the video never leaves your device.
